How old tires get handled

How Ontario handles old tires

Since January 1, 2019, Ontario's Tires Regulation makes the companies that make and sell tires responsible for collecting and recycling them. We charge a small eco fee per tire, $2 to $5 for a passenger tire, to cover collection and processing.

Drop-off on its own

Bring old tires in without booking other work. Tell us how many so we can confirm the fee.

Rolled into any tire service

Have us swap, replace or repair your tires and the old set can be disposed of in the same visit, no separate drop-off trip required.

Our Process

How disposal works

1

Old tires come off

Removed during a swap, replacement, or as a standalone drop-off.

2

Eco fee applied

A small per-tire fee, generally $2 to $5, covers collection and processing.

3

Routed to the recycling program

Tires go into Ontario's industry-run recycling stream, not a landfill.

4

Recycled rubber, reused

Processed material gets a second life instead of sitting in a pile or a fire.

What happens to your old tires

No landfill, no burning

Every tire we take goes through Ontario's recycling program, never dumped or burned.

Small, disclosed fee

The eco fee is generally $2 to $5 per passenger tire and shown on your invoice, not buried in a bundled price.

Can pair with any service

Bring in old tires on their own or have us pull them during a swap, replacement or repair.

How the fee works

Why there is no single provincial fee anymore

Until the end of 2018, Ontario ran tire recycling through Ontario Tire Stewardship, with one standard fee across the province. Since January 1, 2019, the companies that make and sell tires fund collection and processing directly under Ontario’s Tires Regulation, which is why there is no single fixed fee published today. We charge a small per-tire fee, $2 to $5 for a passenger tire, to cover the cost of getting each tire into the recycling stream.

Disposal questions

How much does tire disposal cost in Ottawa?

We charge an eco fee of $2 to $5 per passenger tire. Since January 1, 2019, tire recycling in Ontario has been funded by the companies that make and sell tires rather than one provincial program, and the fee covers our collection and processing cost.

What actually happens to a tire after it's recycled?

Old tires are processed into rubber material used in things like playground surfacing, road products and other manufactured goods, instead of sitting in a landfill or being burned.

Can I drop off tires without having other work done?

Yes, standalone tire drop-off is fine. Tell us how many tires you're bringing so we can confirm the eco fee.

Why shouldn't I just leave old tires at the curb?

Municipal curbside pickup does not generally accept loose tires, and dumping them elsewhere creates a standing-water hazard and skips Ontario's recycling program entirely. Proper drop-off keeps them out of a landfill.
